Hello internet pals of music. Today is a little different; I’ll be asking a small favor of you, and of course, there’ll be an exchange-another great tune…
Hola, muchachas y muchachos.
I started this Substack in June of 2020, in the middle of that first Black Summer of Covid. I had a Crown Royal bag of ideas, none of them very clear other than that I would be sharing the music that excites, fascinates & soothes me while trying to also lube up this rusty bike chain of writing “talent” (we all have it, we just don’t get to all practice it; you’re all capable artists too, in the same way).
SERMONS! is reader-supported. There are both free and paid subscriptions. If you’re wishing to support my work, I encourage you to become a paid subscriber.
It was exciting for a while. People were signing up, people were emailing me about songs I’d shared. And then, like all these internet ideas, things cooled off. I researched ways to promote it. I submitted it for a few Substack residencies, things like that. Spoiler: Substack actually isn’t into fostering new writers, or small newsletters. Foolish of me to think otherwise, though so THAT’S ON ME, JACK.
I joined Shitbird, umm Twitter. What an awful cesspool!
Still, things stayed pretty much the same. I think they call that something in Marketspeak™, but I couldn’t care less to know.
See, the point I’m trying to make here is that I never wanted to hustle Musik Klub / SERMONS!. It was always meant to be a thing that you found, or that someone shared with you.
I can’t stand our internet hustle-culture. It never feels authentic for me to be on Twitter or Instagram, typing into the void about yet another great song, another post I’m proud of, just to get this great music out to more people.
I’m not a music journalist. I’m not even sure I consider myself any type of writer. I just know good music. I certainly don’t know marketing.
For those paid members: THANK YOU Y GRACIAS! You have no idea how much that validates what I’ve been doing. I feel like I’m letting y’all down by not giving you as much attention as I was. With life shit and a full time job, I don’t spend as much time on that as I did. I plan on making some changes there soon to make your support worthwhile.
For free members: THANK YOU Y GRACIAS! You also have no idea how much that validates what I’ve been doing. I want to keep sharing great music with everyone out in their little computer boxes.
SO HERE’S WHERE I ASK YOUR HELP.
Word of mouth. Know any other music fiends? Please tell them about SERMONS! Maybe there’s one standout track for you; I mean, we’ve been going all over the place musically over the past two years. There’s bound to be something for everyone here.
All it takes to help is to spread the word. Because the bigger SERMONS! gets, the more opportunity to do even cooler things with it; the two of us that are the core of Musik Klub have lots of ideas, but we could use your help:
TELL A FRIEND IF YOU FEEL LIKE IT!
No pressure, though. No one needs pressure, dudes.
SERMONS! is brought to you by Musik Klub. You can also find Jamie on Twitter and Instagram, if that’s your thing. Like what you’re hearing? Help spread the word!
