Hello internet pals of music. Today we’re going deep into outer space with some Japanese Neu! fetishists.
The Japanese are really good at understanding aesthetics. There is an argument to make that they may quietly have a better understanding of sensuality than even the Italians. Am I making wide generalizations that I haven’t thought fully through? You bet I am! That’s why I have a blog, ahem, NEWSLETTER, and why I’m not writing for established publications. I’ve been thinking a bit about this lately. Like, why are they so fucking good?
SERMONS! is reader-supported. If you’re wishing to support my work, I encourage you to become a subscriber. Otherwise, we’ll both probably forget about this thing.
I mean, please friends, forgive my ignorance. My thoughts are so half-baked on this, unrefined and frayed. In fact, it’s like the opposite of the approach a band like Minami Deutsch seems to take. Where I’m on the fringes of the outer glow, they’ve centered straight into the corona, controls set for the heart of the sun.
It’s a funny thing to reflect upon. I’ve never thought of myself as one of those people that fetishizes a culture. I have always wanted to visit, but never really thought I needed to live there. I don’t feel like I go out of my way to like, seek things that are specifically Japanese.
But goddamn they get it. Whatever it is, they get it. And I love that immensely, and always have.
