This is the sound of Jason Vorhees becoming an American pop culture phenomenon.
A bouncy popcorn of rhythmic machete-slashing. I’d love for someone to invent that time machine I’ve been waiting what seems like an eternity on, so I could be a fly on the wall during production meetings for this abomination of a film. Truthfully, that’s a shallow thing to want from a time machine, but so be it-I’m only one coffee in to this rainy syrup of a morning, and that’s the best I can muster so far.
Also, this theme seems a bit dated for 1983. Goblin was doing this for films like Contamination (a bloody bore about an alien pod invasion) a few years earlier. Had Manfedini been lurking the Times Square grindhouses for inspiration?
Why do I like trash like this?
It’s complex, I don’t know how to rationalize my love for such morally reprehensible films like Maniac, Cannibal Holocaust or Pieces. The violence, the misogyny…I don’t get it, because it’s not me. Yet I’ve seen these films so many times, and in fact find them comforting, like settling in under a favourite blanket.
I just don’t know. Anyway, good luck out there today. Pet a black cat, pick up a stranger on the side of the road, go in the basement…
Like what I’m doing here? Let me know by suggesting it to someone else that may like it. Not into this song? Stick around for the next one, it may be what you didn’t know you needed! Remember, there are only two genres of music here at SERMONS!: good and bad, and I have too much to do to waste time on bad music.
