The Secret Diary of Jamie Ward, Aged 48
Buzzcocks - Something's Gone Wrong Again ( 1979 / Punk )
Hello internet pals of music. Today let’s count our blessings with one of the greatest odes to modern life.
Monday: Recurring sinus infection flares up. Spend the afternoon, then evening in a blurry haze of hot tea, sinus meds and snot. Total hours sleeping or close to it: eighteen.
Tuesday: Still infected, but fighting! Try to work. Back horizontal by 5 pm. There was a hot bath somewhere in there, I believe. Who can remember? More hot tea.
Wednesday: Feeling good-er? Better? It was great to not smoke for two days, I should really quit! Come home from work to a notice on the door that there has been a disruption in the gas service and to call to have a technician come to relight all of the pilots. Wait until 10 pm for the technician, give up, reschedule and go to bed. Only one cigarette.
SERMONS! is reader-supported. If you’re wishing to support my work, I encourage you to become a subscriber. Otherwise, we’ll both probably forget about this thing.
Thursday: Technician booked between 8 am and 9 am. Important zoom meeting at 10, so hope to get that gas business sorted out before; how awkward would that be having to leave a meeting with the city permitting office to get my gas turned back on? Alas, crisis averted. Technician never shows. Reschedule for after work. Wait until 7 pm, when he shows and proceeds to point all the code violations in my renovated (read: overpriced) death trap rental. Extra bonus event: After finally enjoying another bath after a day and a half with no hot water, the electricity cuts off as I’m reading a book (and drinking more hot tea!). Look outside, and discover it happens to have only affected my very short block. Give up, go to bed. Woken up several hours later when every light and appliance that I thought I’d turned off, simultaneously turns back on.
Friday: Internet keeps cutting out as I write this. The coffee is good though. God, I want a cigarette!
