Hello internet pals of music. Today, well shit, it’s a day alright. So here’s a left curve of early 2000s Houston rap to get you into Friday the right way. What’s the matter, you never seen the sun rise before?
He’s the People’s Champ. Houston brewery 8th Wonder named a beer after him.
It’s Paul Wall. I’m sorry, there’s nothing else you need to say about it. If it’s Paul Wallaby, I’m going to listen.
And look, maybe you don’t like a lot of rap, or you’re forever stuck in that molasses pit of East v West. Or your rappers have to wear backpacks… who knows what your deal is. It’s not mine to wonder about.

It was his verse on the Mike Jones track Still Tippin’ that grabbed me, his cadence dancing all over that glacial beat. All three emcees shine on that classic but Paul Wall’s verse is most memorable for me, and he shows why everyone loves him by spending a chunk of his time gassing up the people around him.
That’s the kind of shit we need. Gas your friends up.
